Stadium Merdeka was built to celebrate the declaration of independence for Federation of Malaya back in 1957.
In February 2003, Stadium Merdeka was named a national heritage building. In 2007, it underwent restoration to its original 1957 condition as part of Malaysia’s 50th anniversary plans. The restoration received the UNESCO Asia-Pacific 2008 Award of Excellence for Cultural Heritage Conservation.
Stadium Merdeka is unique as it holds the distinction in the history of modern Southeast Asia as the only purpose-built venue for the Declaration of Independence ceremony. The place is significant as it was a brainchild of the first Prime Minister and it remains an icon in Malaysia’s independence.
